UN child rights experts issue findings on Antigua and Barbuda, Bhutan, Cameroon, Lebanon, Mongolia, Qatar, Romania and USA*

GENEVA (8 June 2017) – The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child has published its findings on the following countries which it examined during its 15 May – 2 June session in Geneva: Antigua and Barbuda, Bhutan, Cameroon, Lebanon, Mongolia, Qatar, Romania and USA.

The findings cover how the respective State is doing with regard to children’s rights, detailing positive developments, main areas of concern, and recommendations for action. The findings, officially known as concluding observations, are published here.

The Committee on the Rights of the Child is composed of 18 international independent experts, who monitor implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, ratified to date by 196 States. They also monitor implementation of the Optional Protocol on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography (OPSC) and the Optional Protocol on the involvement of children in armed conflict (OPAC),  ratified by 173 States and 166 States respectively.

The Committee will next meet from 11September to 29 September in Geneva to review: Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Denmark, Ecuador, Republic of Moldova, Tajikistan and Vanuatu.

In addition, members will examine Guinea‘s implementation of the two Optional Protocols to the Convention, on involvement of children in armed conflict and on sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography. More details here.

* The US has signed in 1995 but not ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child but it did ratify in 2002 the two Optional Protocols to the Convention on the Rights of the Child: OPAC on involvement of children in armed conflict and OPSC on sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography.
