UN Human Rights Chief to visit Uzbekistan, 10–12 May 2017

Visit to Uzbekistan

GENEVA/TASHKENT (9 May 2017) – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein will visit Uzbekistan, at the invitation of the Government, from 10 to 12 May 2017. It is the first ever visit to the country by a High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Zeid will meet President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the Deputy Prime Minister and Chairperson of the Women's Committee, and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Interior and Justice. He will also hold discussions with the Speaker of the Parliament Legislative Chamber, the Chairperson of the Supreme Court and the Prosecutor-General. He will in addition meet with the Director of the National Human Rights Centre, the Parliamentary Ombudsperson, and local civil society organizations.

He will also make a short visit to Samarkand where he will meet with representatives of different confessions and national cultural centres.

At the end of his visit, on Thursday 11 May, the High Commissioner will hold a press conference at the Press Club in Tashkent at 16:00.
