UN Human Rights chief Zeid to visit Oman and Kuwait

BEIRUT/GENEVA (6 February 2017) – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein is currently in Oman for his first visit to the country since being appointed as High Commissioner in September 2014.

The High Commissioner, who arrived on 4 February and will stay until 6 February, has been holding high-level meetings with senior State officials and members of civil society in Muscat. He was also due to deliver a letter, on behalf of the UN Secretary-General, to His Majesty, Qaboos bin Said al Said, the Sultan of Oman, conveying the Secretary-General’s concerns about the situation in Yemen.

Following his visit to Oman, Zeid will continue to Kuwait for a visit from 7 to 8 February 2017. He is due to meet His Highness the Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, and other high-level State officials in addition to civil society representatives. This will also be Zeid’s first visit to Kuwait in his capacity as High Commissioner.
