09 December 2016

Adopts Concluding Observations and Recommendations on Reports of Argentina, Uruguay, Togo, Portugal, Turkmenistan and Italy

GENEVA (9 December 2016) - The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination today closed its ninety-first session after adopting its concluding observations and recommendations on the reports of Argentina, Uruguay, Togo, Portugal, Turkmenistan and Italy on how those countries implement the provisions of the Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

The Committee’s concluding observations and recommendations on the six country reports are available on the Committee’s webpage.

Committee Chairperson Anastasia Crickley, in closing remarks, said that during the session, the Committee had successfully reviewed six country reports, and thanked all Committee Members and civil society organizations for their contributions in this process.  The Committee had held consultations with civil society under the title “Joining Hands to End Racial Discrimination”, which had further deepened the understanding of the different roles in the struggle against racial discrimination. The Committee had examined cases under the early warning and urgent action procedure, and had also dealt with one communication.

The Chair recalled the importance of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination in the contemporary context, and said that racial discrimination must be named and understood for what it was in today’s world, in terms listed under article 1 of the Convention.  It was crucial to understand the complexity of the issues that the Committee was dealing with, as well as the intersectionality of multiple forms of discrimination, she concluded.

Comprehensive meetings coverage of all public meetings held this session, including the country reviews, can be found here.
