UN child rights committee to review Luxembourg

GENEVA (26 May 2016)  - Luxembourg’s record in tackling the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography will be reviewed by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child on Tuesday 31 May in a session that will be webcast live.

Luxembourg is one of the 173 states that have ratified a key legal instrument known as the Optional Protocol on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography (OPSC). As such, Luxembourg is required to undergo regular examinations of its record by the Committee of 18 independent experts.

Among the possible issues for discussion between Committee members and the government delegation from Luxembourg:
·    Progress in establishing a centralised system for child protection data;
·    Measures to protect vulnerable children, especially victims of domestic violence, children in institutions, children using the Internet without proper supervision, children who use drugs, child migrants and asylum seekers;
·    Measures to prevent child sex tourism abroad;
·    Steps to protect child victims and witnesses at all stages of the legal process.

The discussions will take place at Palais Wilson in Geneva on Tuesday 31 May from 10:00-13:00. The meeting is public and will be webcast here:  http://www.treatybodywebcast.org/.

The Committee will base its evaluation on the submitted report, the delegation’s replies, as well as information from national human rights institutions and civil society groups. 

A news conference is scheduled at 12:00 on 9 June at the Palais des Nations in Geneva to discuss the Committee’s findings on Luxembourg and the other countries being reviewed - Samoa, Nepal, UK, Slovakia, Pakistan, and Gabon.
