UN Committee on Migrant Workers to review Kyrgyzstan, Peru, Uganda

GENEVA (7 April 2015 ) –The UN Committee on the Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers and their Families (CMW) is meeting from 13 to 24 April to review: Kyrgyzstan (13-14 April), Peru (14-15 April), Uganda (15-16 April)

The above are among the 47 States Parties to the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families. They are required to submit regular reports to the Committee, which is composed of 14 international independent human rights experts.

Venue: Room XI, Palais des Nations, Geneva
Time: Country sessions start 15:00 to 18:00 Geneva time; resume following day 10:00 to 13:00

Among the possible issues for discussion:

Kyrgyzstan: National legislation on migration policies, bilateral and multilateral agreements with other countries, in particular Russia and Kazakhstan; conditions of detention for migrant workers; measures to combat trafficking and smuggling of migrants; legal assistance for migrant workers in criminal and administrative proceedings; legal and labour protection for migrant workers, including in agriculture and domestic work sector.

Peru: Regulations governing detention of migrant workers, including those of Haitian origin; access to justice for Peruvian migrant workers in destination countries; trade union statutes that allow only Peruvian nationals to join; progress in implementing anti-discrimination legislation that promote equal opportunities for migrant workers; measures to assist and protect victims of human trafficking.

Uganda: Legal framework regarding protection of migrant workers; main challenges and obstacles in regulating labour migration processes; measures taken to implement National List of Hazardous Child Labour; detention of migrants; steps taken to ensure right of quality of treatment of migrant works, including those in an irregular situation; right to transfer earnings and savings.

The Committee will discuss the issues with the respective government delegations and also hear from NGO representatives, national human rights institutions and other UN agencies.
