Cambodia: UN Special Rapporteur in fact-finding mission

Mission to Cambodia

GENEVA / PHNOM PENH (1st December 2011) – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia, Surya Subedi, will carry out an official visit to the country from 5 to 11 December 2011.

“While the focus of my mission will be an analysis of the electoral system and related institutions from a human rights perspective, I will also continue to follow-up on other aspects of the human rights situation in the Kingdom of Cambodia,” Mr. Subedi said, announcing his sixth visit to the country.

During his mission, the Special Rapporteur will also meet with Government authorities, civil society organizations, the National and Provincial Election Committees, and the Constitutional Council. He is also expected to hold discussions with the Cambodian National Police.

At the end of his six-day visit, Mr. Subedi will release a press statement highlighting the issues raised during his meetings. The information he gathers during his mission to Cambodia will be reflected in his report to the Human Rights Council in September 2012.

Professor Surya P. Subedi was appointed by the UN Human Rights Council as the UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Cambodia in March 2009. As Special Rapporteur, he is independent from any government or organisation and serves in his individual capacity. He is currently Professor of International Law at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom.
