UN human rights high-level visit to Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay

GENEVA / SANTIAGO / ASUNCION / MONTEVIDEO (13 October 2011) – The United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, Kyung-wha Kang, will undertake a tour of Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay from 17 to 26 October 2011 to gather first-hand information on the situation of human rights and encourage the authorities to strengthen the inclusion of human rights in their political agendas.

During her visits to Chile (17-19 Oct.), Paraguay (19-22 Oct.) and Uruguay (24-26 Oct.), Ms. Kang will discuss the broad human rights agenda with all three governments

The Deputy High Commissioner will meet, during her 10-day mission, with high-level authorities from the executive, judicial and legislative branches in the three countries, as well as with civil society organizations, national human rights institutions, UN agencies and representatives of the diplomatic corps, to foster action on human rights and closer cooperation with different stakeholders.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has a Regional Office for South America in Santiago and a Human Rights Adviser in Asuncion.
