GENEVA (28 October 2011) – The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay will on Tuesday begin her first official visit to the Republic of Moldova to discuss a broad range of rights issues with the Government, the Centre for Human Rights, as well as civil society organizations.

During her four-day visit, Pillay is due to meet high-level officials including the Acting President of Moldova, the Prime Minister and a number of other ministers, judicial officials and parliamentarians. She will visit a psychiatric hospital in Chişinău to bring into focus the human rights of those hospitalized or detained in such institutions. The UN human rights chief will also visit the Transnistrian region.

Pillay will focus on, among others, human rights issues relating to diversity and discrimination, the treatment of people with disabilities and combatting impunity for torture. She will also launch an OHCHR commentary on human rights and human trafficking at an event on Wednesday, 2 November, and will participate in the opening session of the International Conference on Responding to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Recommendations on Friday, 4 November.

The High Commissioner will hold a press conference on Friday, 4 November 2011 at 11:45am at the UN House in Chişinău.
