GENEVA (10 November 2010) – The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, is to pay her first visit to Bolivia from 12-16 November 2010, where she will meet with President Evo Morales Ayma.
The UN human rights chief is seeking to gain first-hand understanding of current dynamics in the Plurinational State of Bolivia in relation to human rights, including progress in some areas as well as specific issues of concern. She is also examining ways in which her office can provide further support and advice to the country.
Ms. Pillay’s visit takes place in the context of a recent agreement with the Government which extends the presence of the OHCHR office in Bolivia for a further three years, until 2013. The country office was established in 2007 to provide technical assistance to State institutions and civil society organizations, promote human rights, and monitor and report on the status of human rights in the country.
In addition with the meeting with the President, during her stay in Bolivia the High Commissioner will hold meetings with the Minister of Foreign Affairs David Choquehuanca, the Minister of Justice Nilda Copa Condori, and other senior government officials, as well as representatives of the National Assembly and the Judiciary. Ms. Pillay will also meet with the Ombudsman, indigenous authorities and members of civil society – including Afro Bolivian organizations - to discuss a range of human rights issues.
The High Commissioner will hold a press conference at 16:00 am on Tuesday 16 November at the Illimani Room, Radisson Hotel, Av. Arce 2177, La Paz.
