High-level visit to Panama

GENEVA (30 July 2010) – The UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, Kyung-wha Kang, will visit Panama from 2 to 4 August 2010. Ms. Kang, will meet with national authorities, the national human rights institution and civil society organizations, to discuss human rights issues.

As Panama is the UN hub for the Americas, Ms. Kang will also meet with representatives from regional and national UN agencies and programmes with a view to further promoting the integration of human rights into the work of the UN.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights established a Regional Office in Panama in 2007. Its Regional Office for Central America currently covers Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.

On Wednesday 4 August, at the end of her visit to Panama, the Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights will travel to Mexico to take part in the Conference on Education, Empowerment and Development organized by the International Federation of University Women.
