UN Expert on violence against women undertakes follow-up visit to El Salvador

GENEVA (16 March 2010) - From 17 to 19 March 2010, the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences, Ms. Rashida Manjoo, will conduct a follow-up visit to El Salvador, last visited by the mandate in 2004.*

“During my mission, I will review progress made on the recommendations provided by my predecessor by looking into the current situation of violence against women and the State response to address such violence”, said the human rights expert, who will visit El Salvador at the invitation of the Government.

The Special Rapporteur will hold discussions with government authorities, civil society organizations, representatives of United Nations agencies and international organizations, and individual victims of violence.

Based on the information obtained during the visit, Ms. Manjoo will present a report containing her findings and recommendations to a forthcoming session of the Human Rights Council.

At the conclusion of the visit, a press release will be made available on the website of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
