UNITED NATIONS PURSUES EFFORTS TO REVIVE PEACE PROCESS IN ANGOLA

27 October 1998

SG/98/9
27 October 1998

The Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Angola, Issa Diallo, is presently at the United Nations Office at Geneva on a mission aimed at implementing the Security Council’s latest resolution on Angola. Resolution 1202 (1998), adopted on 15 October 1998, extended the mandate of the United Nations Observer Mission in Angola (MONUA) until 3 December 1998.

Coming from United Nations Headquarters in New York where he met with the Secretary-General and held consultations with the Security Council, Mr. Diallo arrived in Geneva last week. According to the resolution, the extension of the mandate of MONUA provides the Secretary-General’s Special Representative with an additional opportunity to revive the stalled peace process. Within the framework of the Lusaka Protocol and relevant Security Council resolutions, the Special Representative is carrying out numerous contacts while in Geneva in order to organize a tour in Africa in coming weeks to hold high-level meetings aimed at getting the peace process back on track.

In its latest resolution, the Security Council calls upon the Government of Angola and UNITA to cooperate fully with the Special Representative, including facilitation of his contacts with all those key to the peace process. The Council encourages the Special Representative to coordinate his efforts with regional and subregional organizations.

On the basis of the results of the efforts of the Special Representative, the Secretary-General will present a comprehensive report to the Security Council no later than 23 November 1998 which will enable the Council to consider the future role of the United Nations in Angola.
