UNITED NATIONS EXPERT ON INTERNALLY DISPLACED TO VISIT UGANDA

The Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on the human rights of internally displaced persons, Walter Kaelin, will carry out a working visit to Uganda from 12 to 17 July 2009.

“This visit comes at a moment the transition process to recovery is ongoing and durable solutions must be found for all the displaced, including the most vulnerable,” said the United Nations expert. This is a follow-up of his earlier visit to Uganda in 2006.

Mr. Kaelin plans to meet with governmental stakeholders at central and district level, with other relevant national actors as well as United Nations and other international organizations, the World Bank and donors.

The Representative will also will travel to remaining camps for internally displaced persons, transit sites and return areas in Gulu and Pader districts in Northern Uganda and meet with the displaced and returnees.

Walter Kaelin, an independent expert and professor of law at the University of Bern (Switzerland), has been the Representative of the Secretary-General on the human rights of internally displaced persons since 2004.
