UN WORKING GROUP ON THE USE OF MERCENARIES TO VISIT CHILE

Geneva, 5 July: The Working Group on the use of mercenaries as a means of violating human rights and impeding the exercise of the right of peoples to self-determination will conduct a fact-finding visit to Chile from 9 July to 13 July 2007, at the invitation of the Government of Chile.
During the visit, the Working Group will hold meetings in Santiago and other locations, and consult with representatives of the Government, non-governmental organizations and inter-governmental organizations, as well as with other individuals. The Working Group welcomes this opportunity to identify, study and discuss emerging issues, manifestations and trends regarding mercenaries, mercenary-related activities; and the role of private military and private security companies and their impact on human rights.
The Working Group delegation will be headed by the Chairperson-Rapporteur of the Working Group, Mr. José Luis Gomez del Prado, and include Working Group member Ms. Amada Benavides de Pérez. The Working Group will later report on the visit to the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly.

The Working Group on the use of mercenaries as a means of violating human rights and impeding the exercise of the rights of peoples to self-determination was established by the Commission on Human Rights in 2005. The Working Group is composed of five independent experts, serving in their personal capacities, and is headed by its Chairperson-Rapporteur, Mr. José Luis Gomez del Prado (Spain). The other Working Group experts are Ms. Najat Al-Hajjaji (Libyan Arab Jamahiriya), Ms. Amada Benavides de Pérez (Colombia), Mr. Alexander Nikitin (Russia) and Ms. Shaista Shameem (Fiji).

EL GRUPO DE TRABAJO SOBRE LA UTILIZACIÓN DE MERCENARIOS VISITARA CHILE
Ginebra, 5 de julio: El Grupo de Trabajo de las Naciones Unidas sobre la utilización de mercenarios como medio de violar los derechos humanos y de obstaculizar el ejercicio del derecho de los pueblos a la libre determinación visitará Chile del 9 de julio al 13 de julio de 2007, a invitación del Gobierno.
Durante su visita, el Grupo de Trabajo mantendrá reuniones en Santiago y otros lugares. La delegación del Grupo de Trabajo recabará información del Gobierno y de organizaciones intergubernamentales y no gubernamentales sobre los asuntos relativos a su mandato con el fin de estudiar e identificar las cuestiones, manifestaciones y tendencias que están surgiendo con respecto a los mercenarios, a actividades relacionadas con los mercenarios y a actividades de las empresas militares y de seguridad privadas; así como su impacto y repercusiones sobre los derechos humanos.
La delegación del Grupo de Trabajo estará compuesta por su Presidente-relator, Sr. José L. Gomez del Prado, y un miembro del Grupo de Trabajo, la Sra. Amada Benavides. El Grupo de Trabajo presentará más adelante el informe relacionado con su visita ante el Consejo de Derechos Humanos y la Asamblea General.

El Grupo de Trabajo está compuesto de cinco expertos independientes trabajando en sus capacidades personales. El Presidente-relator del Grupo de Trabajo es Sr. José Luis Gomez del Prado (España).
