UN SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON THE PROMOTION AND PROTECTION OF THE RIGHT TO FREEDOM OF OPINION AND EXPRESSION VISITS HONDURAS

Geneva, 27 November 2007: Ambeyi Ligabo, the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, started a five-day to Honduras at the invitation of the Government.

During his visit from 26 to 30 November 2007, the Special Rapporteur will hold talks with Government officials responsible for matters of freedom of opinion and expression and will meet with representatives of journalist associations, non-governmental organizations and other actors active in the field. of relevance to his mandate and individuals. He will present a report of his mission to the Human Rights Council.

Mr. Ligabo was appointed Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression in 2002 by the former United Nations Commission on Human Rights. His mandate consists of protecting and promoting freedom of opinion and expression in the light of, among other instruments, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
