UN SPECIAL ENVOY TO VISIT THE BALKANS

Carl Bildt, the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General to the Balkans, will leave on Wednesday, 30 August for a trip to the Balkans which will take him to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro as well as Zagreb. He is scheduled to meet with the Presidents of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro and Croatia as well as other political leaders.

The region is entering a period of critically important elections, says Mr. Bildt. There will be local elections in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia on 10 September, local elections in Serbia as well as federal elections in Yugoslavia on 24 September, local elections in Albania on 1 October and 15 October, local elections in Kosovo on 28 October, and parliamentary as well as entity and presidency elections in Bosnia on 11 November.

One way or the other, we will see the political landscape of the region changing during these important months, Mr. Bildt said. There is always a risk that old resentments will bring new tensions, but our hope is that the forces of reform, reconciliation and reintegration will strengthen their positions in all of these elections.
