UN RIGHTS EXPERT TO VISIT MYANMAR

Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, the Special Rapporteur on the situation in Myanmar of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, will visit that country at the invitation of the Government from 17 to 28 October 2002.
During the visit, the Special Rapporteurs fourth to Myanmar, Mr. Pinheiro will travel to Yangon and to locations outside the capital. He will hold meetings with Government officials, judicial authorities, other members of the legal profession, as well as with representatives of different political parties and social organizations.
In Yangon, he will also meet with heads of diplomatic missions, representatives of the United Nations system in the country and international non-governmental organizations.
The Special Rapporteur has issued an interim report (UN document A/57/290),which he will present at the fifty-seventh session of the General Assembly this autumn together with his preliminary observations on this visit to Myanmar.
