UN EXPERT TO VISIT SUDAN TO ASSESS HUMAN RIGHTS SITUATION

The Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Sudan, Sima Samar, will visit Sudan at the invitation of the Government from 12 to 17 August 2006. During the visit, Ms. Samar will hold meetings with a wide range of interlocutors in Khartoum and then travel to West and North Darfur to assess the current human rights situation.

The Special Rapporteur is tasked to monitor and report on the human rights situation in Sudan. This will be her third visit since her appointment in 2005. She visited Sudan in October 2005 and again in February 2006. The Special Rapporteur delivered an oral statement to the Third Committee of the General Assembly on 27 October 2005 and is due to present her report (E/CN.4/2006/111) to the second session of the Human Rights Council.
