UN EXPERT ON THE HUMAN RIGHTS OF MIGRANTS TO VISIT ROMANIA AND THE UNITED KINGDOM

The Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, Jorge Bustamante, will undertake country visits to Romania from 15 to 20 June 2009, and to the United Kingdom from 21 to 26 June 2009, at the invitation of the two Governments.

In order to gather first-hand information in relation to his mandate, Mr. Bustamante will meet with Government officials, national human rights institutions, civil society members and representatives of UN agencies. The Special Rapporteur will also meet with border control authorities and conduct visits outside of the capital cities.

The Special Rapporteur will present a report containing his conclusions and recommendations to a forthcoming session of the Human Rights Council.

Mr. Bustamante, a Mexican national, is an independent expert appointed as Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants by the former Commission on Human Rights in 2005. His mandate was extended by the Human Rights Council in 2008 to help states and others, promote and protect the human rights of migrants and overcome existing obstacles to the full and effective.
