TORTURE ELECT FIVE MEMBERS TO THE
COMMITTEE AGAINST TORTURE

The Ninth Meeting of States parties to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment on Wednesday, 26 November 2003 elected five members of the Committee against Torture to replace those whose terms of office are due to expire on 31 December 2003.
The meeting elected Mohamad-Salah Dembri, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Government of Algeria to the United Nations in Geneva, as its Chairman and Ian Fergusson, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Government of Canada to the United Nations in Geneva, as Vice-Chairman.
Representatives of 112 of the 134 States parties were present and voted at the meeting. The number of votes obtained by the nine candidates nominated were as follows:
Ms. Rusudan Beridze (Georgia) 17 Mr. Guibril Camara (Senegal) 79 Ms. Felice Gaer (United States of America) 92 Mr. Claudio Grossman (Chile) 87 Mr. Karel Hejc (Czech Republic) 68 Mr. Vafaddin Ibayev (Azerbaijan) 28 Mr. Andreas Mavrommatis (Cyprus) 78 Mr. Antoine Kesia-Mbe Mindua (Democratic Republic of Congo) 26 Mr. Julio Prado-Vallejo (Ecuador) 70
Four members were re-elected: Guibril Camara, Felice Gaer, Claudio Grossman and Andreas Mavrommatis, while Julio Prado-Vallejo was elected to the Committee.
