SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON RIGHT TO HIGHEST ATTAINABLE STANDARD OF HEALTH TO VISIT UGANDA

Paul Hunt, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, will visit Uganda at the invitation of the Government from 4 to 9 February 2007.

This mission has two principal objectives: to understand the role of Sweden, in particular the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), in relation to the right to the highest attainable standard of health in Uganda, building upon the Special Rapporteur's mission to Sweden in January 2006; and to follow-up to the mission that the Special Rapporteur undertook to Uganda, at the invitation of the Government of Uganda, in March 2005.

The Special Rapporteur will meet with Government officials and with representatives of the United Nations system during the course of the mission. He also intends to hold meetings with representatives of civil society, including non-government organisations, members of the media and academics.

After the visit, the Special Rapporteur is set to present a report containing his findings and recommendations to the Human Rights Council.

The Special Rapporteur is an independent expert appointed by the United Nations to help States, and others, promote and protect the right to the highest attainable standard of health.
