SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON ADEQUATE HOUSING VISITS CAMBODIA

22 August 2005

22 August 2005

The Special Rapporteur on adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, Miloon Kothari, will visit Cambodia from 22 August to 2 September 2005 at the invitation of the Government.

Mr. Kothari will examine and report on the status of realization of adequate housing and other related rights in the country, with particular attention to gender equality and non-discrimination. He intends to engage in dialogue with the Government, United Nations and international agencies and civil society to identify practical solutions and good practices in the realization of rights related to his mandate.

The Special Rapporteur is expected to visit several places and communities in and around Phnom Penh, Battambang, Poipet and Siem Reap. Through meetings with all relevant actors and on-site visits, the Special Rapporteur wishes to study the specific situation of women and of children, minorities, migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons and indigenous peoples, with regard to housing and other related services.

The Commission on Human Rights appointed the Special Rapporteur in 2000 to study and report, as an independent expert, on the realization of adequate housing worldwide. The Special Rapporteur will present his findings and recommendations to the sixty-second session of the Commission in April 2006.

Further information about the work and the mandate of the Special Rapporteur can be found on the website of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), www. unhchr.ch/housing. Information and submissions can be addressed to the Special Rapporteur care of OHCHR, 8-14 Avenue de la Paix, 1211 Geneva 10, Switzerland.
