18 July 2005

The Special Rapporteur on adequate housing of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, Miloon Kothari, will visit Iran from 19 to 30 July 2005. Mr. Kothari will go to Teheran and the cities of Bam, Kermanshah and Yassoj.

The Special Rapporteur will examine and report on the status of realization of the right to adequate housing and other related rights in the country, paying particular attention to aspects of gender equality and non-discrimination. He will also engage in dialogue with the Government, United Nations and other international agencies present in the country, and with civil society regarding their efforts to secure these rights; and identify practical solutions and best practices in the realization of rights related to his mandate.

The Special Rapporteur says he intends to take a “constructive and supportive approach that will provide solutions aimed at the realization of housing rights”, and draw practical policy recommendations. He will submit a report on his findings to the sixty-second session of the Commission on Human Rights in 2006.
