SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON ADEQUATE HOUSING TO VISIT BRAZIL

The Special Rapporteur on adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living, Miloon Kothari, will visit Brazil at the invitation of the Government from 30 May to 13 June 2004.

The general objectives of this mission are to examine and report on the status of realization of adequate housing and other related rights in the country, with particular attention to gender equality and non-discrimination. The Special Rapporteur intends to engage in dialogue with the Government, United Nations and international agencies and civil society to identify practical solutions and good practices in the realization of rights related to his mandate.

The Special Rapporteur is expected to visit several places and communities in and around São Paulo, Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro, Recife and Fortaleza. Through meetings with all relevant actors and on-site visits, the Special Rapporteur wishes to study the specific situation of women and of children, minorities, including Quilombos, particularly in rural areas, migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons and indigenous peoples, with regard to housing and other related services, including in favelas.

The Special Rapporteur's findings and recommendations will be presented to the sixty-first session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in April 2005. The Commission appointed the Special Rapporteur in 2000 by to study and report on the realization of adequate housing world-wide, in his capacity as an independent expert. With his visit to Brazil, Mr. Kothari aims to gain a better understanding of the situation in urban and rural areas with respect to adequate housing, and land and displacement issues related to his mandate.
