The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) today expressed alarm about the escalation of the conflict in South Ossetia, Georgia, which has reportedly led to an increasing number of deaths and injuries among civilians, and urged all sides "to take concrete steps to prevent further civilian casualties."
OHCHR called on all parties "to show utmost restraint and -- under any circumstances -- to ensure full respect for international humanitarian and human rights law, in particular the right to life, liberty and security of the person." OHCHR also urged all sides "to safeguard the rights of displaced people and refugees, including through the creation of safe passages for them to leave conflict areas."
