OFFICE OF HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS CONDUCTING ASSESSMENT MISSION TO BRAZIL

01 June 2001

1 June 2001

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is fielding a Needs Assessment Mission to Brazil from 4 to 19 June 2001.

The Mission, which follows the “Memorandum of Intent” (MOI) signed by High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson and the Government of Brazil during her visit to the country in March last year, aims to identify technical cooperation needs in order to address some of the human rights issues Brazil is confronted with. In particular the mission will assess the mandate, means, capacities and achievements of existing human rights entities in the country with a view to strengthening existing capacities both at the federal and local levels.

According to the terms of the MOI, “The High Commissioner for Human Rights shall cooperate with and assist the Government in the development and implementation of programmes of technical cooperation taking into account the priorities outlined in the Framework for Regional Technical Cooperation for Latin America and the Caribbean agreed upon in Quito, Ecuador in December 1999”.

The mission will visit Brasilia, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Bahia and Pernambuco. It will hold meetings with Government officials, local authorities and representatives of civil society.
