HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE CONCLUDES CONSIDERATION OF ISSUES TO BE RAISED ON REPORTS BY CAMBODIA, CAMEROON, CHILE

The Human Rights Committee this afternoon concluded consideration of the
list of issues to be taken up in connection with the initial reports of Cambodia, the third periodic report of Cameroon and the fourth periodic report of Chile.

The Committee, which adopted the lists of issues, began discussing them this afternoon as part of a series of procedural and organizational matters addressed during the first phase of its sixty-fifth session.

This morning, the Committee approved the list of issues to be raised in connection with the fourth periodic reports of Canada and Costa Rica and the initial report of Lesotho. It also elected its Chairman, three Vice-Chairmen and a Rapporteur. Also this morning, new or re-elected members of the Committee were sworn in.

The six countries presenting reports during the current session are among the 144 States parties to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The Committee, as a monitoring body, periodically examines reports submitted by States parties on their promotion and protection of civil and political rights. Representatives of those governments will introduce their country reports and respond to oral and written questions from the Committee's 18 members, who serve in their personal capacity. (For

The Committee is scheduled to meet again at 10 a.m. tomorrow, 23 March, to continue its deliberations.
