HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS TO VISIT SUDAN

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour will visit Sudan, including the Darfur region and the south of the country, from 30 April to 5 May.
On 30 April the High Commissioner will meet with officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and with representatives of human rights non-governmental organizations. She will also meet with members of the United Nations Mission in Sudan.
'The High Commissioner will travel to Nyala, South Darfur, on 1 May, where she will meet with local non-governmental organizations, community leaders, local authorities. She is also set to visit the town of Manawashi, where thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) have gathered recently.
On 2 May the High Commissioner will be in El Geneina and visit the Ardamata IDP camp. Among other activities she is scheduled to meet the Governor of West Darfur.
Returning to Khartoum on 3 May, the High Commissioner is expected to meet with senior Sudanese Government officials and representatives of the diplomatic community, among others. On 4 May the High Commissioner will travel to Juba, in southern Sudan.
This will be the High Commissioner’s second visit to Sudan, and the first to the south of the country. In September 2004 Mrs. Arbour and Juán Méndez, the Secretary-Gerneral’s Special Representative on the prevention of genocide, travelled to Khartoum and the three provinces of Darfur, the scene of serious human rights violations resulting from the conflict in the region. In a January report on the situation in the country, the Office of the High Commissioner (OHCHR) made a number of recommendations to help the Government close the gap between commitment and implementation, calling, among other moves, for measures to end a culture of impunity throughout Sudan, a stop on attacks on civilians and the disarmament of militias.
