HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS TO VISIT NEW DELHI FROM 15 TO 17 FEBRUARY

High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson will visit New Delhi, India, from 15 to 17 February to take part in the Seventh Asia-Pacific Workshop on Regional Cooperation for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.

The High Commissioner will open the workshop in the morning of Tuesday, 16 February (for information on the workshop see accompanying United Nations Press Release HR/99/11). After arriving in New Delhi on 15 February, the High Commissioner will meet with representatives of United Nations agencies in India to highlight the integration of human rights into all aspects of the work of the Organization. She will also address the Global Conference on Democracy, a new worldwide association of democracy activists. Mrs. Robinson will then speak on human rights and women at a conference organized by the International Association of Women in Radio and Television.

On Tuesday, Mrs. Robinson will meet the Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, as well as the Minister for External Affairs Jaswant Singh, the Minister for Home Affairs L. K. Edvani and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India, A.S. Anand.

In the morning of 17 February, the High Commissioner will have meetings with Nobel Prize laureate in economics, Amartya Sen; the Independent Expert of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights on the right to development, Arjun Sengupta, and the Chairman and members of the Indian Commission on Human Rights. In the afternoon, she will see representatives of women's groups during a meeting to be hosted by the National Commission for Women. This encounter will be followed by a news conference at the United Nations Information Centre in New Delhi. After the meeting with the press, the High Commissioner will meet representatives of human rights non-governmental organizations.
