The United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women, Radhika Coomaraswamy, will visit Bangladesh, Nepal and India from 28 October to 14 November 2000 to investigate trafficking of women and girls in the region.

The Special Rapporteur will meet with government officials, representatives of United Nations agencies, academics, representatives of women's organizations, and individuals who are able to provide first hand information in order to obtain an accurate picture of the situation.

Ms. Coomaraswamy is visiting the region at the invitation of all three Governments. She intends to establish facts, discuss possible solutions and make recommendations to the Governments concerning trafficking of women and girls. The Special Rapporteur will visit Bangladesh from 28 to 30 October, Nepal from 30 0ctober to 4 November and India from 5 to 14 November.

Ms. Coomaraswamy, a lawyer and long-time women's rights advocate from Sri Lanka, has served as Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences since the United Nations Commission on Human Rights created the post in March 1994.
