The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is convening a seminar of experts on Athe Protection of Minorities and Other Vulnerable Groups and the Strengthening of Human Rights Capacity at the National Level for Central and Eastern European countries from 5 to 7 July in Warsaw.

The seminar, organized in cooperation with the Polish Government, is part of a series of regional meetings being held in preparation for the World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, which is set to take place in South Africa in September of next year. Experts taking part in the seminar, which is open to observers from all United Nations member States, will have among their objectives the consideration of some of the key issues of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance in the region; the exchange of information on Abest practices@ in dealing with racism; discussion of action-oriented strategies and the encouragement of a groundswell of Governmental, institutional and public support for the World Conference and its goals.

As Secretary-General of the World Conference, High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson will also convene expert seminars in Africa, Asia, and Latin America in close cooperation with United Nations regional economic commissions.
