CERD
57th session
9 August 2000

Reflecting its serious concern about the plight of Roma in many countries, the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination will hold a general discussion on the issue of discrimination against Roma on 15 and 16 August 2000.

The Committee has decided to devote three meetings to this general discussion: one meeting on 15 August 2000 between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. and two meetings on 16 August 2000 between 10:00 a.m. and 1 p.m. and between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Taking into account the interest of other human rights bodies on the issue, the Committee decided to invite the Chairperson of the Subcommission for the Promotion and the Protection of Human Rights, the Chairperson of the Working Group on Minorities of the Subcommission, the Special Rapporteur on Roma issues of the Subcommission, the Chairperson of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the Special Rapporteur of the Commission on Human Rights on Contemporary Forms of Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance to address the meeting.

The Committee has also invited the following regional organizations to attend the meeting and, if they so wish, to address it: the Council of Europe, the Arab League, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, the Organization for African Unity and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

Bearing in mind the interest of many non-governmental organizations and in order to give them the opportunity to convey their views on the issue, the Committee decided to organize, on 15 August 2000, at 10:00 hours, an informal meeting with the participation of all interested international and national non-governmental organizations. Their representatives will have the opportunity to address the Committee for 5 to 10 minutes each, depending on the time available.

Both the general debate and the informal meeting will be public.
