CESCR
22nd Session
4 May 2000
Morning

The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights this morning approved a request by the Government of Jordan to postpone consideration of its second periodic report until a future session.

Shehab Madi, the Permanent Representative of Jordan to the United Nations Office at Geneva, told Committee members that the Government had a good record of cooperation with the Committee.

However, he said, due to various unavoidable circumstances, the Government was requesting a postponement in the consideration of the report. Jordan would present a supplementary report to the Committee before June 1.

As one of the 143 States parties to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Jordan must periodically submit reports to the Committee.

Earlier this week, the Committee approved a request by Portugal to delay consideration of its report until November. The Committee had not yet set a new date for Jordan.

Later in the meeting, Committee experts discussed ways to ensure that States parties sent delegations to present reports at the scheduled dates.

That discussion will continue when the Committee reconvenes at 3 p.m. this afternoon.
