UNITED NATIONS EXPERT ON SALE OF CHILDREN IN FIJI NEXT WEEK TO PROBE SEX TOURISM CLAIMS

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography will visit Fiji next week to look into allegations suggesting that Fiji is becoming a destination for child-sex tourism.

The expert, Ofelia Calcetas-Santos, says information she has received suggests that successful legislative and educational initiatives taken in other countries to combat child-sex tourism may have led to the growth in the phenomenon elsewhere, including Fiji and other Pacific Islands, as abusers look for alternative destinations.

During her visit, set to last from 11 to 15 October, the Special Rapporteur will meet with different sectors of Fijian society, including governmental and non-governmental officials working in the areas of child protection, tourism and foreign affairs, as well as with private individuals. From Fiji she will travel to Canberra for one day to be briefed on the measures the Australian Government is taking to deter Australian nationals from taking part in child-sex tourism.
