The Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Roberto Garreton, will visit the country from 13 to 26 August at the invitation of the Government.

During this official mission, the Special Rapporteur will hold meetings in Kinshasa with the country's highest civil, judicial and military authorities. Mr. Garreton will also meet with representatives of human rights non-governmental organizations, religious dignitaries, leaders of political parties, trade union officials, journalists, magistrates and delegates of international humanitarian organizations. Visits to prisons and detention centres are also anticipated.

The Special Rapporteur will then visit Goma, Bukavu, and Mbuji-Mayi. He will also travel, for the first time since his appointment as Special Rapporteur in 1994, to the cities of Kisangani and Gbadolite.

Mr. Garreton's last visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo took place from 28 August to 6 September 1999. The Commission on Human Rights renewed his mandate for a further year on 18 April (see Commission resolution 2000/15)
