Adopts Its Provisional Programme of Work

The Committee on the Rights of the Child opened its twenty-sixth session this morning by adopting its provisional programme of work.

At the beginning of the meeting, Committee Chairperson Awa N'deye Ouedraogo underlined that the Committee's current session was the first in the twenty-first century and the third millennium. The end of the last century had been marked by human-rights violations, she said, adding that the violations had particularly targeted children whose vulnerability had increased during the last twenty years.

Mrs. Ouedraogo further said that the special session of the General Assembly on the rights of children next September should open future prospective based on plans and programmes of action designed to improve the situation of children in the world. She recalled that the preparation for another important conference was underway, which would deal with the ever- increasing phenomenon of sexual exploitation of children. This year, the World Conference against Racism would also be held in South Africa, she added.

Also this morning, a representative of the Secretariat of the Committee announced that the Committee had received two initial reports from Niger and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

When the Committee reconvenes at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, 9 January, it will begin its consideration of country reports by taking up the initial report of Latvia (CRC/C/11/Add.22). It was also announced that High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson will address the Committee at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, 10 January.
