In commemoration of the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution 52/149 of 12 December 1997, the United Nations Office at Geneva and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights are organizing an exhibition of works of art created by victims of torture.

The exhibition is made up of some of 150 works of art by torture victims from around the world, gathered by 40 organizations which work in 32 countries. Most of these organizations are financed by the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture to provide medical, psychological, social, economic, legal or humanitarian assistance to victims of torture and members of their families.

The paintings, sculptures, drawings and tapestries were created, on the most part, during sessions of artistic therapy which are organized within the framework of the rehabilitation of the victims and represent a way to express the suffering endured or to show the positive effects of therapy. These works of art were donated to the Fund by their authors.

The exhibition will be held from Thursday, 15 June to Thursday, 6 July 2000 at the Palais Wilson in Geneva, which is the seat of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. It will be officially inaugurated by the High Commissioner, Mary Robinson, on Monday, 26 June at 2:30 p.m. The International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is commemorated on 26 June.

The secretariat of the Fund will be available to receive and inform visitors in English, French or Spanish on 15, 21, 23, 26 and 28 June and on 4 and 6 July, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Address: Trust Funds Unit, OHCHR, UNOG, CH-1211 Geneva 10, tel.
