The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights will host from 29 January to 2 February an expert meeting on traditional and new forms of mercenary activities as a means of violating human rights and impeding the exercise of the rights of peoples to self-determination.

The meeting, the first of two to be held this year, was called for by the Commission on Human Rights and the General Assembly last year. Participants will include nine experts from all the geographical regions invited in their personal capacity, as well as the Special Rapporteur on the use of mercenaries, Enrique Bernales Ballesteros. Among the topics to be discussed are current manifestations of the mercenary phenomenon, the impact of mercenaries on peace and security, terrorism, organized crime and national legislation to combat mercenaries.

A report on the meeting will be considered at the fifty-seventh session of the Commission later this year.
