STATE PARTIES TO CONVENTION AGAINST TORTURE ELECT FIVE MEMBERS
OF COMMITTEE AGAINST TORTURE



The Seventh Meeting of the States Parties to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment which met in Geneva at the Palais des Nations yesterday elected five members of the Committee against Torture.

The members of the Committee reelected were Peter Thomas Burns (Canada), Guilbril Camara (Senegal), Alejandro Gonzalez Poblete (Chile) and Andreas Mavrommatis (Cyprus), while Felice Gaer (USA) was elected as a new member of the Committee, replacing Ms Ada Plajnar-Pavcnik of Slovenia, who did not seek reelection. Their membership will begin on 1 January 2000 for a term of four years.

The meeting was attended by 95 of the 118 States parties to Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. The election was by secret ballot in accordance to article 17 of the Convention.

The Committee is an expert body composed of ten members, which also includes Sayed Kassem le Masry (Egypt), Antonio Silva Henriques Gaspar (Portugal), Bent Sorensen (Denmark), Alexander Yakovlev (Russian Federation), and Yu Mengja (China).
