The Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, Dato' Param Cumaraswamy, will visit the Slovak Republic from 27 to 30 November 2000 to study the state of the independence of the judiciary in the country.

During the field mission, the Special Rapporteur of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights will meet with the Minister of Justice; representatives of the judiciary, including the President and Vice-President of the Supreme Court; the Head of the Slovak Union of Independent Judiciary, and representatives of the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee of the National Council of the Slovak Republic.

The Special Rapporteur has recently been particularly concerned by the attempt of the Government of the Slovak Republic to remove the President of the Supreme Court from office. Mr. Cumaraswamy intends to use the visit to assess the situation directly and to express his concerns to the respective parties. A report of the mission is expected to be presented to the fifty-seventh session of the Commission on Human Rights in March-April 2001.
