Sub-Commission on the Promotion
and Protection of Human Rights
52nd Session
1 August 2000
Morning

The Subcommission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights this morning discussed the organization of work for its three-week session, focusing particularly on allocation of time to various agenda items and the amount of time given to Experts for individual statements.

The Subcommission decided that a sessional working group on the administration of justice should be re-established and that one meeting should be given to this working group during the session.

The Subcommission debated whether nor not to adopt a bureau proposal that the report of the Subcommission in its present session should include an annex containing a description of Subcommission discussions on violations of human rights in specific countries, as the Commission on Human Rights had decided that the Subcommission should no longer pass resolutions on situations in specific countries.

The panel also appointed members to its various working groups. For the working group on the working methods and activities of transnational corporations, Experts El-Hadji Guisse, Soo Gil Park, Vladimir Kartashkin, Manuel Rodriguez Cuadros, and David Weissbrodt were elected; and for the working group on administration of justice, Experts Leila Zerrougui, Yozo Yokota, Stanislav Ogurtsov, Hector Fix-Zamudio, and Franciose Jane Hampson were appointed.

The Subcommission will reconvene at 10 a.m. to continue its consideration of its methods of work before starting its debate on its agenda item concerning the question of the violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including policies of racial discrimination and segregation, in all countries, with particular reference to colonial and other dependent countries and missions.
