COMMITTEE ON RIGHTS OF CHILD OPENS TWENTY-THIRD SESSION

Awa N’deye Ouedraogo Elected as New Chairperson

The Committee on the Rights of the Child opened this morning its three-week winter session by adopting its agenda and by electing Awa N'deye Ouedraogo of Burkina Faso as its new Chairperson in replacement of Nafsiah Mboi of Indonesia who resigned last October.

The Committee elected Mrs. Ouedraogo in a private session. She will serve as Chairperson for the remaining period of the two-year term of Mrs. Mboi, which lasts until the beginning of 2001.

Also this morning, a new Committee member, Lily Rilantono, designated by the Government of Indonesia to replace Mrs. Mboi, made a solemn declaration to undertake to discharge her duties as a member of the Committee on the Rights of the Child impartially and conscientiously.

The Committee is composed of 10 independent experts, although States parties have adopted an amendment to the Convention on the Rights of the Child that would increase the membership to 18 in order to enable the Committee to face a rapidly growing workload. The amendment will enter into force upon its acceptance by a two-thirds majority of States parties.

In the course of the morning meeting, a representative of the secretariat of the Committee announced that since the last session, initial reports had been received from the United Kingdom, Tanzania, Qatar, Gambia and Cape Verde, while Burkina Faso and Poland had submitted their periodic reports.

When the Committee resumes its work in public session at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, 11 January, it will start its consideration of the initial report of India.
