SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON EXTRAJUDICIAL, SUMMARY OR ARBITRARY EXECUTIONS TO VISIT NEPAL


The Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions of the Commission on Human Rights, Asma Jahangir, will visit Nepal from 5 to 14 February 2000 at the invitation of the Government.

Ms. Jahangir will collect first-hand information from a wide range of sources in order to better assess the situation and evaluate allegations of human rights violations relevant to her mandate reported to have occurred in the country.

Ms. Jahangir will travel to Kathmandu, Gorkha and Nepalganj and meet with authorities from the executive, legislative and judicial branches. In Kathmandu she will meet, among other authorities, the Home Minister, the Minister of Justice, the Attorney General and the Inspector General of
the Police.

The visit will also include meetings with a wide range of non-governmental organizations and private individuals engaged in human rights work.

The Special Rapporteur, an attorney at the Supreme Court of Pakistan and Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, was appointed Special Rapporteur of the Commission on Human Rights in August 1998. She will hold a press conference on her mission to Nepal on 14 February 2000 at 11 a.m. local time at the United Nations Development Programme office in Kathmandu.
