MARY ROBINSON, SECRETARY-GENERAL
OF WORLD CONFERENCE AGAINST
RACISM, LAUNCHES NEWSLETTER

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and Secretary- General of the World Conference against Racism, Mary Robinson, today marked Human Rights Day with the launching in Geneva of a Newsletter from the Conference Secretariat, "Durban 2001-United against Racism".

Speaking on the occasion, the High Commissioner said the Newsletter was part of the build up to the World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance which was scheduled to take place in Durban, South Africa, from 31 August to 7 September 2001.

The High Commissioner stated that the aim of the Newsletter was to brief Member States, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), national institutions, United Nations bodies, the media and civil society about the preparations for the World Conference with a view to increasing awareness and to ensure that all concerned are kept in the picture. She encouraged readers to contribute news items on racism and intolerance that could be of interest.

The first issue of the Newsletter contains summary reports on five expert seminars that have taken place and on the deliberations of the regional conference held in Strasbourg (France) last September. Topics such as gender and racism, the role that national institutions can play in the fight against racism, xenophobia and related intolerance, as well as updates on NGO activities, are also covered in the Newsletter. Future issues will cover upcoming regional conferences and provide brief reports on the intergovernmental and non-governmental preparatory process.

The Newsletter will also be available in French.

Jyoti Shankar Singh, Executive Coordinator of the World Conference against Racism, is the Editor-in Chief of "Durban 2001-United against Racism".
