United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson and European Commission President Romano Prodi met today in Geneva for a general discussion on the importance of human rights in today's world and on ways to enhance cooperation, as well as to review the state of preparations for the World Conference against Racism.
Mr. Prodi, who is carrying out the first-ever official visit by a President of the Commission to the United Nations organizations in Geneva, reiterated the support of the executive organ of the European Union to the Office of the High Commissioner (OHCHR). Mrs. Robinson highlighted the substantial contributions the Commission has made to fund the preparatory process of the World Conference and briefed Mr. Prodi on OHCHR's field operations and on its fundraising needs.
