NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS



The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination will be observed at the United Nations Office at Geneva on 21 March 2001. In 1966, the General Assembly proclaimed the International Day and called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination. This year, the Day takes on special significance since the United Nations will hold the World Conference Against Racism in South Africa.

"ART FOR THE WORLD" EXHIBITION

5.30 - 6.30 p.m. in Hall 14 (behind the Assembly Room)

SPORT AND ART IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY

Selection of work from a multimedia travelling exhibition on the theme of sport and art in society produced by the leading lights from the new generation of artists. The exhibition pays tribute to the human will to overcome obstacles and succeed. It addresses racism and sport, since sport represents an endeavour that brings together individuals regardless of race, culture or gender.

The exhibition in its entirety will be shown worldwide: Milan (2001); Sao Paulo (2001); Geneva (2002); New York (2002); and Dakar (2003). The last stop will be Athens (2003-2004 ) where the project will culminate in a celebration of sport coinciding with the Olympic Games.
