HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION APPOINTS EXPERTS ON RIGHT TO FOOD, ADEQUATE HOUSING

The Chairman of the Commission on Human Rights, Shambhu Ram Simkhada of Nepal, has appointed Jean Ziegler of Switzerland and Miloon Kothari of India as Special Rapporteurs on, respectively, the right to food and the question of adequate housing.

Mr. Ziegler, a professor of sociology at the University of Geneva and its Institute for Development Studies, is renowned internationally for his works on development and international affairs. His career has taken him from the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Congo in 1961 to service, starting in 1976, with the Socialist International. Mr. Ziegler has served several terms in the Swiss National Council (Parliament), notably in its Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade. His most recent work is, “La faim dans le monde, expliquee a mon fils” (unofficial translation: “Explaining World Hunger to My Son”).

Mr. Kothari, an architect by training, has extensive experience in the area of housing rights. He is the convener of the Housing Rights Committee of Habitat International Coalition and is an advisor to the Youth for Unity of Voluntary Action, India’s leading organization on housing rights. He has also worked actively to promote the realization of the whole range of economic, social and cultural rights.

The Commission voted to name experts on the right to food and on adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living at its session last spring. The Special Rapporteurs will serve for three years and will report the results of their research and field missions to the Commission.
