HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE ADOPTS LIST OF QUESTIONS TO REPORT OF GUYANA

Panel submits questions for second periodic report
to be taken up next session


The Human Rights Committee held a brief public meeting this afternoon to consider the list of questions to be addressed to the report of Guyana, which will be examined by the Committee next year.

During its next session, which will be held from 13 to 31 March 2000, the Committee will also consider the reports of Republic of Congo, Afghanistan, United Kingdom (Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man), Venezuela and Mongolia.

During its meeting, the Committee adopted the list of questions concerning the second periodic report of Guyana. The list of questions focused on such topics as compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights; gender equality and violence against women; right to life; prevention from torture and degrading treatment; liberty and security of person; the treatment of prisoners and other detainees and the right to a fair trial; freedom of expression; right to family and protection of children; and the right to participation in public life, among others.

The Committee continued its meeting in a private session to discuss its draft concluding observations and recommendations on the report of Macau.

When the Committee reconvenes at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, 3 November, it will continue its discussion in private.
