Mary Robinson Will also Travel to Indonesia for Rights Workshop,
Talks with Government



United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson will make a two-day official visit to China next week to sign an agreement on technical cooperation with the Government.

During the visit, which starts on Monday, 20 November, the High Commissioner will meet with President Jiang Zemin and Vice Premier Qian Qichen, as well as hold working sessions with Vice Foreign Minister Wang Guangya in Beijing.

In addition to signing the agreement, or Memorandum of Understanding, between her Office and the Government, the High Commissioner will also discuss the possible modalities for its implementation. While in Beijing, she will open and participate in a workshop on economic, social and cultural rights in which she is expected to reaffirm her Office's commitment to acting as a constructive partner with the Chinese Government and members of civil society in promoting and protecting human rights.

From China, the High Commissioner will travel on 22 November to Indonesia to deliver the keynote address at the annual workshop of the National Commission on Human Rights being held in Surabaya. On 23 November, Mrs. Robinson is scheduled to meet in Jakarta with senior Indonesian Government officials, including Attorney-General Marzuki Darusman. She will also meet with representatives of non-governmental organizations and the United Nations country team.
